Shaun Bromley, senior project man- ager at Graham Construction, says that eight levels of underground parkade were excavated for the tower, and verti- cal post tensioning was required from the parking levels to the 23rd storey. "We also used a substantial amount of rebar, for instance on the lower levels we had 88 bar, 35M columns, and while it was a challenge to meet the aggressive production cycles, we stayed on course." Adding to the challenges was a tight construction site with power lines on three sides and a building on the fourth side. "Great care had to be taken where we placed our cranes and material hoists, and we relied heavily on just-in-time material deliveries," Bromley says. "We also used seven extendable outriggers for the form workers loading the curtain wall." Bromley adds that "because each floor had different dimensions with drop ceilings, we were constantly re- routing pipes and equipment. And then, with the pandemic, we had to manage procurement delays." Still, as of May 2022 Alberni by Kengo Kuma's distinctive balcony fins had been com- pleted up to level 35, and cladding had been installed up to the roofline. Borowski says, "This is a truly exciting project with a groundbreak- ing design, visible as you drive across the Lion's Gate Bridge. And while we all knew this would be a special tower, it is still a delight to see just how spe- cial it has turned out to be." A LOCATION 1550 Alberni Street, Vancouver, B.C.
