J U N E 2 0 2 2 | 57 Health Sciences Centre – BCIT P H OTO G R A P H Y CO U RT E S Y B I R D CO N S T RU C T I O N Indigenous motifs installed as glaz- ing films will enhance 62 windows on the southwest corner of building that overlook the building's social stairs uni- fying the entire façade in one design. The commons space within is com- posed of three bleacher-style tiered staircases, amphitheatre, study, and garden. They support three learning typologies: large lecture-style gather- ings; group work; and solitary study. Also, at every floor, students can step out to generous vegetated roof terraces that support accessible moments of decom- pression in a learning environment that can often be stressful and over- whelming. On the roof, another garden will showcase native B.C. plants, spe- cifically species that play medicinal and other roles in Indigenous cultures. Sustainability objectives for the centre are exemplary. In addition to WELL Gold certification – a standard which seeks to support and advance human health and wellness along with targeting a highly energy efficient and low-carbon building footprint – the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Gold certification is targeted. With 60 Level 2 electric vehicle chargers in the building, the BCIT Burnaby Campus will become home to one of the largest charging centres for electric vehicles in all of Metro Vancouver. It is also connected to BCIT's geo-exchange field which means during the summer heat is removed from the buildings and stored underground in 72 wells, each 75-metres deep. Then, during the win- ter, it is extracted to heat the building. The team is proud of how close collab- oration helped them navigate their way through the supply chain issues common to so many projects nearing comple- tion this year. The result is a building that truly raises the bar in every sense. "We were very fortunate to work with BCIT. This project reminds me of the importance of architecture in place making, in brand recognition, and in student and faculty attraction," says Leclerc, to which Rodocker adds: "We saw something very special with this partnerships. Everything went smooth and we all had a great win with BCIT."
