District of Columbia Public Library – Southwest Library, Washington, DC. 32 | J U N E 2 0 2 2 Engineered Wood Products SOLVENTS & ADHESIVES When it comes to adhesives, Henkel's Loctite HB X Purbond continues to be trusted as it is the only single-component adhesive approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in the U.S. and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) in Canada for mass timber construction in North America. It contains no solvents, creates no liquid waste and releases no toxic emis- sions. It is 100 percent solids and delivers twice the mileage versus traditional adhesives, so customers only need to purchase and ship half as much. It cures at room temperature, without requiring additional energy to adhere. Loctite HB X Purbond foams during curing, which is believed to help reduce air leakage in the finished elements. This can support heating and cooling efficiency for buildings. The key to protecting and beautifying engineered wood is to find a suitable wood finish, as the experts at Sansin well know. Waterborne finishes – those that penetrate the wood rather than sit on top of it – enable the product to pen- etrate into the wood fibre. Of course, the need for durability must be balanced with the desire for a lasting natural aesthetic. To achieve the chosen look, special treatments may be required so that the appearance is balanced with a formula that is strong enough to provide the required U V protection. As you might suspect, darker, more opaque colours or multiple coats will result in a longer maintenance cycle than a one-coat clear system. Especially for large buildings, Sansin recommends a penetrating undercoat be applied to the wood. This protects the wood in transit and at the construction site from UV degradation and minimizes water absorption especially at the end grain. A good example of this approach is the LEED Platinum District of Columbia Public Library – Southwest Library in Washington, DC, which was designed by Perkins&Will and recently won the coveted Wood Design & Building Sansin Award. The library's structural wood was manufactured by StructureCraft and is protected with Sansin's low-VOC coatings. The interior European white spruce glulam was coated with Sansin's KP-12. The KP-12 formula features outstanding penetrating protective undercoats for timbers, dimensional laminated lumber, and engineered wood components that enhance dimensional stability, protect wood from U V degradation and aid in moisture management. KP-12 is more than just a protective undercoat, it also is recoatable and tintable and therefore, able to be the initial coat of a complete architectural coating system. On the exterior of the library, a KP-12 formula was applied to the glulam, which received an additional layer of protection from Sansin SDF. Sansin SDF's unique water-borne technology provides complete, tough, and effective protec- tion in a beautiful, rich finish. "This building is just the latest example of architects turning to Sansin to protect their engineered wood projects so they are beautiful today and will stand the test of time," says Caroline March-Long, Sansin's director of sales and marketing. "We have a long track record of protecting engineered wood on some of the world's most impressive structures. Our coatings allow the beauty of the wood to shine through while at the same time offering superior protection."
