72 | J U N E 2 0 2 2 tə šxʷhəleləm̓ s tə k ʷaƛ kʷəʔaʔɬ – UBC The use of BIM proved equally important to Bush, Bohlman & Partners structural engineers. Mike Mariotto, partner at Bush, Bohlman & Partners, explains, "Since a large plaza slab would be created to support heavy landscaping loads, BIM facili- tated the modelling of the slab with varying slopes in multiple directions. "Also, some of the structural chal- lenges included designing the large, cantilevered transfer slabs above some of the building entrances, to support the upper edge columns. To meet strength and deflection crite- ria, while maintaining an efficient design for these transfer slabs, we also specified slab edge camber- ing and special temporary shoring instructions during construction." The buildings were renamed tə šxʷhəleləm s tə k ʷaƛ kʷəʔaʔɬ when the Musqueam Nation honoured UBC with a gift of the hən q əmin əm - language names for these residences in spring 2021. "The buildings also reflect our commitment to integrate storytelling and awareness of indig- enous history into our facilities," Parr says. "tə šxʷhəleləm s tə k ʷaƛ kʷəʔaʔɬ has a storytelling wall in each of the five building lobbies, a commissioned art piece on the glass awnings, plus the buildings are enhanced by an Indigenous planting program." The final phase of residences was opened in April, and Parr is proud of the outcome: "These five buildings help alleviate a long waiting list of stu- dents, and they're a great enhancement to the northeast corner of the cam- pus. Working with the architects and Heatherbrae was a great experience." A LOCATION 5955 and 5965 Student Union Boulevard, Vancouver, B.C.
