"Also, our newly formed Insulated Metal Panel Group is very exciting, as strong market demand for this product contin- ues. Evolving energy codes and acceptance by A&E firms will continue to replace single skin applica- tions using conventional roof and wall assemblies." Maodus is referring to Nucor's $1-billion acqui- sition in late 2021 of Cornerstone Building Brands' insulated metal panels business for a cash purchase price of approximately $1 billion, which prompted Jeff Carmean, president of Nucor Insulated Panel Group, to remark, "We are excited to officially wel- come our Centria and Metl-Span teammates as part of the Nucor team. Adding these two brands to our Group will allow us to provide our customers with a full range of products to service high-end architec- tural applications, as well as the quickly expanding cold storage and warehousing markets." But Maodus is mindful that plenty of challenges will remain throughout the 2022. "Here in Ontario there are some indicators of companies heading to the sidelines and deferring expansion plans," he says. "Concerns over the effects of inflation and sub- sequent lending rates are fueling watch-and-wait strategies. Supply chain issues are largely unre- solved and are not expected to clear up in the near term. Anticipated issues for 2022 are much the same as 2021, with added uncertainty relating to inflation, interest rates, and commodity volatility." Insulated panels are something Vicwest relies on in providing metal roofing and wall systems aimed at withstanding the harshest climates. The All Weather Insulated Panels (AWIP) that it distributes to the Canadian market deliver superior insulation, construction efficiency, and long-term building per- formance – which eco-conscious builders, designers, and owners now seek. These unique panels are made up of highly energy efficient, factory controlled polyisocy- anurate foam insulation sandwiched between a finished metal exterior and an interior face. They are available in a broad line of wall and roof pan- els, accompanied by a full range of complementary trims, accessories, and engineering services. As for un-insulated applications, Vicwest's AD150, 200, 275, and 300 series of wall panels are an excellent choice for designers seeking clean architectural lines, and each of these profiles are installed using a hidden fastening system and can be applied either vertically or horizontally. All of the AD profiles are excellent for a total wall application or as an accent band on the face of any building. As a metal panel specialist, Vicwest is not shy about noting its environmental objectives and that over the past five years its goal has been to reduce the waste it generates during the product manufac- turing process. During this time, it has reduced the amount of waste that goes to landfill to 60 percent, with the remaining 40 percent being recycled. This year, Vicwest's goal is to reduce waste even further, with only 40 percent of it going to landfill. One way this is being achieved is by radically minimizing the company's consumption of lumber by redesigning transport crates to consist of less wood – a side ben- efit of which is that these crates mean less weight of every truck leaving the Vicwest facility, thus improving fuel efficiency. When asked to cite a new project that typifies what her company is capable of, Genevieve Filteau, director of marketing at Quebec-based Honco, replies, "We are building a new sports complex aug- mented by a wood structure in Saguenay, Quebec." Filteau is referring to a $23.5-million, 61-by- 100-metre facility with an indoor grass field, a unique suspended walking track, and var- ious common areas. Construction began last June and is expected to finish this sum- mer, and when completed the stadium will be able to accommodate 160 people (seated).
