12 BCBUSINESS NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021 PORTRAIT: ADAM BLASBERG I f you lead a team, you can probably relate to the challenges that Anna Sainsbury, co- founder and chair of GeoComply Solutions, and the other bosses and decision makers in our cover story (p.47) have been facing. The hybrid working world wrought by the pandemic has made it tougher for leaders to connect with their people, but it's also pushed them to build trust and show empathy. Those qualities kept coming up when Canada Wide Media chair and CEO Peter Legge, editorial interns Pallavi Rao and Saphiya Zerrouk, and I chatted with the 10 subjects of our Leadership feature. Eric Carlson, founder and CEO of real estate developer Anthem Properties, captured that welcome trend. "How do you lead people who want to self-actualize? You can't use that com- mander or carrot-and-stick approach," Carlson told me. "You've got to relate to them; they've got to relate to you. And that's all part of that good leadership model of trust and inspiration, anyway. And so I think that leadership has had to become more empathetic." There's plenty more to read in this issue. In "Room to Grow" (p.32), asso- ciate editor Nathan Caddell digs into the business of psychedelic and func- tional mushrooms, whose proponents claim they can make people mentally and physically healthier. "Boom with a View" (p.38) takes you on board a construction crane with Richard Littlemore, who asks what's being done to prevent disasters like last summer's fatal accident in Kelowna. Speaking of trips, "Up in the Air" (p.60) considers the future of busi- ness travel, which faces a difficult recovery. To get a sense of how that journey might unfold, Matt O'Grady chats with a (former) frequent flyer and several experts in outbound and inbound traffic. Now that travel is showing signs of life again, we're pleased to welcome back columnist Charlene Rooke, whose latest Carry On (p.87) checks in at Canadian hotels for business stays. We're also excited to introduce a new column: Land Values by Frances Bula (p.23), which explores where the B.C. real estate market is heading. A longtime contributor to the magazine, Bula brings her deep knowledge of urban issues and civic politics to bear on one of the province's most important industries. No matter what industry you work in, I hope this year has been a prosperous and rewarding one. As always, thanks to our readers, advertis- ers and contributors—and to the many remark- able businesspeople who share their stories with us. We wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday season. Nick Rockel, Editor-in-Chief bcb@canadawide.com / @BCBusiness ( editor's desk ) We rank the Best Cities for Work in B.C. Plus: Our 2022 Real Estate Investment Guide I N JA N UA R Y/ F E B RUA R Y Leading Somewhere Good C ON T R I B U T OR S Writing about construction cranes has been a long time in the works for Richard Littlemore, author of "Boom With a View" (p.38). His curiosity dates back to the building of Vancouver's Shaw Tower almost two decades ago, when he became fascinated by the steel giants. "I've always looked at them and thought, What a bizarre place to be in the world." After a 20-year career in news writing, Littlemore has been a freelance journalist and speechwriter since the mid-1990s. For Jennifer Kennedy, who captured conservationist Jasper Lament for "Wild Things" (p.83), photography has always been a passion. Kennedy shoots editorial and weddings part-time while working as an educator in Powell River. On this assignment, she wanted her subject to be in his element. "I was really just looking for a place that he felt at home and comfortable in, and a place that he would seek out on his own."
