Passiflora quadrangularis editor's letter n, dia 4in or ail: nd ns Tropical Oasis TUCKED AWAY in a picturesque corner of East Vancouver, Elisabeth Zoffmann's exotic garden is brimming with activity on an otherwise lazy, summer day. Writer and garden expert Christine Allen brings this eclectic haven to life in this issue's feature story A Winning Combination (see page 34). For more than a decade, Zoffmann has assembled an unusual and exotic array of plants, some more likely to be found in the tropics than Western Canada – try a showy passion flower with deep red petals and editor's picks DISH IT UP The charming, distinct shapes and rustic deckled edges of Vietri's dinnerware are perfect for an easy, summer get-together. Plates, Beaucoup Bakery a centre crown shot through with alternating rows of white and purple rays. (Photographer Bob Young set up his camera and equipment before daylight to capture the perfect shot of this awe-inspiring specimen just as its bracts were beginning to unfurl.) Zoffmann maintains an expansive glassed-in verandah on the upper floor of her house where she can overwinter these glamourous blooms. Meanwhile, she has filled in the gaps with her go-to annual – a coleus that turns the colour of a sunset and also serves to pull things together. The dense planting provides cover and food for a variety of birds drawn to the bird baths and fountain. While most of us can only admire Zoffmann's handiwork from afar, landscape architect Erin Renwick provides us with a practical approach to garden design in Creating a Successful Outdoor Entertainment Area (see page 29). Renwick gives us an attainable plan on how to get the most out of your summer outdoor space. We learn that a curved cedar bench is a functional sculpture and a great way to seat a crowd. Finally, writer Sinead Keane gives us a peek into a truly multicultural Westside Vancouver home. Architecture firm John Henshaw Architecture created a unique East-meets-West space that incorporates traditional feng shui principles with open-concept living. ■ Amy Mair, Editor BC Home & Garden amair@canadawide.com EYE CATCHING This candycoloured outdoor chair is a playful way to make a style statement.
