As contributor Carol Crenna writes, children "chase the backyard chickens or mingle on bicycles while eating gourmet ice cream, dwarfed by the giant sunflowers and haphazardly arranged boxes of vegetables . . ." On the surface, Le Marché is an understated corner store and gathering spot for local artistic types. On closer inspection, husband and wife team Pascal Roy and Janaki Larsen, have created an incubator for creative, one-ofa-kind businesses. It is a pick-up location for Inner City Farms and bees are kept in the backyard garden for Mellifera Bees. There are home accessories for sale, Le Marché-branded food products and the occasional pop-up restaurant or artist's studio. Speaking of local, landscape designer Dave Demers has created three international-inspired garden designs tailored specifically to our region known for its mild weather and ample rainfall (see page 43). Demers started with a typical backyard and then transformed it into a tropical, Mediterranean or alpine retreat respectively. The plants and artifacts he used to dress up the spaces can all be sourced at nearby nurseries. Have you ever tried painting your house or condo a colour you spied in a photograph or online, only to be disappointed by the results? Vancouver Colour consultant Kora Sevier has solved this dilemma by hand selecting four paint palettes for BC Home & Garden based on popular locales around the province (see page 35). It is a great way to envision if that vibrant orange you saw on the Internet could work in your space. (Yes, it can, by the way!) Sevier also dishes up several easy painting tips. Forget the accent wall, she says, and try wrapping your colour onto two walls for better harmony. Below our some of our favourite finds from this month's issue.
