University of British Columbia (UBC) Earth Sciences Building (ESB), Vancouver, B.C. Chris Whelan, senior business development manager at Henkel refers to the fact that Structurlam Mass Timber Ltd. recently part- nered with Walmart to build a new manufacturing site in Arkansas, which will use 100 percent Henkel Loctite's one-part polyurethane adhesive. "I think it's an important milestone in the indus- try that a company like Walmart is taking a position to build a green city and invest in green manufac- turing," says Whelan. He adds that he would not be surprised if Google and Microsoft follow suit. Whelan says that Element5 is also building Ontario's very first true mass timber facility. The new 125,000-square-feet facility will house a tech- nologically advanced, fully automated CLT and glulam production line, and produce up to 45,000 cubic metres of CLT and glulam annually. Whelan adds that the versatility and capabili- ties these days of engineered wood is making it increasingly attractive, and offers Carbon 12 (which at 85-feet tall is the tallest cross-laminated timber building in North America as of January 2020), as an example. "We've heard of four-foot by four-foot columns for some of the tall buildings and this has fallen into our wheelhouse as our technology is very suited to large format elements, as it doesn't require heat or radio frequency curing, so production speed is the same as conventional sized mass timber." In fact one of Henkel's products, Loctite HB X, is today the only product in the world that is one-part moisture curing and meets the tall wood fire per- formance requirements of PRG320-2018, which requires full-scale testing to ensure that the CLT does not exhibit fire re-growth when subjected to an exposure similar to FPRF Test 1-4. It allows for more production than any other adhesive production out there. You not only reduce your overhead costs but also your energy cost. In other exciting developments, Henkel has introduced Technomelt hot melt adhesive and Aquance Water based adhesives for use with Ledinek and Minda systems for in-line gluing to edge bond lamella's on mass timber elements. Loctite HB X is also now certified for I-Joist production. When it comes to products, Sansin's Precision Coat has been specially formulated for pre-finish- ing and machine application. Sansin says it delivers the colour, durability, and performance that archi- tects, engineers, and builders can count on. If you are unsure of what product you need, Sansin's architectural consultation service, Sansin Iris, helps professionals find the coating system most suited to project requirements related to both beauty and maintenance objectives. Another product, Sansin's KP-12, is a penetrating protective undercoat for timbers, dimensional lami- nated lumber, and engineered wood that enhances dimensional stability and protects wood from U V degradation and moisture absorption. "KP-12 is tint- able and re-coatable, and therefore can be utilized as part of an architectural coating system," says Caroline March-Long, Sansin's director of sales and marketing. "KP-12 protects wood during the manu- facturing and construction process reducing in-situ preparation and top coat application costs, while at the same time bringing out the best in subsequent topcoats," she adds. KP-12 is aqueous, low-VOC, and available in a range of formulas to protect against U V degrada- tion and reduce swelling, wood rot, and moisture. KP-12W provides enhanced water repellence and excellent hold-out against water absorption that protects engineered lumber against wood rot. KP-12U V W combines long-term U V protection with enhanced water repellency that protects against rot and weathering during construction. KP-12W and KP-12U V W conform to ASTM 4446, the standard test method for anti-swelling effectiveness.
