For anyone who enjoys heated floors on a cold winter day, Ditra-Heat-Duo by Schluter Systems offers a solution, especially for condominiums. "Providing warm, quiet floors in condominiums can be challenging, particularly when using hard sur- face coverings like tiles," says Tod Valickis, product manager. "The concrete construction of these multi- storey buildings is at the root of these challenges. Sound control materials tend to be compressible and not all provide adequate support for the tile cover- ing. Ditra-Heat-Duo reduces sound transmission, in addition to warming the floor and still supporting the covering to ensure a lasting installation." He adds ASTM E2179 testing shows Ditra-Heat- Duo produces an increase in impact insulation class of 20 to a concrete slab floor. "The dual benefits of reducing impact sound transmission and providing faster warm-up times make this membrane an ideal solution for ceramic and stone tile floor installations in multi-storey residential construction." Valickis explains Schluter Ditra-Heat-Duo is an electric floor warming system with an integrated thermal break and sound control to overcome these multiple challenges. "The relatively thin thermal break on the underside of the membrane allows the system to warm tiled floors up to 70 percent faster over concrete substrates by directing heat to the tile, not to the subfloor. The all-in-one system means faster and simpler installation as the membrane, heating cables, thermal break, and sound control material are all combined in a single layer that is only 5⁄16-inch thick. To achieve this assembly would normally require the installation of multiple layers." Mapei launched a new product line, Mapeheat with Technology from nVent Nuheat, which offers complete systems for electric-floor heating. The first solution is an integrated heating cable/mat solu- tion. "Mapei's Mapeheat Membrane, sold in rolls or sheets, is a lightweight uncoupling, crack-isola- tion and waterproofing membrane," says Yoanna Pergantis, marketing manager, Mapei Canada. "With rounded square reliefs, the Mapeheat Membrane provides a channel guide into which the Mapeheat radiant-heating cables securely snap. The membrane's thin profile – less than ¼-inch – works well with remodelling projects in which a new floor is installed directly over a pre-existing one." The Mapeheat Membrane is suitable for ceramic and natural stone tile and mosaic tile, among other flooring options. The Mapeheat Cable, is a free- form, twisted-pair, floor-heating cable for use in any residential interior room. "This cable is designed for use under many types of flooring and is suitable for wet environments, including showers and steam rooms," says Pergantis. "Mapeheat Cable is available in 33 lengths to accommodate areas ranging from six square feet to 293 square feet." The second solution available within the new product line is Mapeheat Mat, a pre-wired floor-heat- ing fabric designed for easy installation. This roll-out product is available in many sizes and can be custom made to fit specific shaped rooms. The pre-wiring aspect of Mapeheat Mat guarantees even heat distribution because the heating wires embedded within the fabric are evenly spaced during production. Both the cable/membrane and pre-wired mat solutions are used in conjunction with any one of three new Mapei thermostats – Mapeheat Thermo Basic, Mapeheat Thermo Touch, and Mapeheat Thermo Connect. "Each thermostat allows users to easily control the settings of the Mapeheat floor-heating system, and offers different features and advantages," Pergantis explains.
