"I ordered it in 15 minutes, and within two months it was delivered straight to my house," she says. She also picked out pieces of jewellery she wanted custom made and had them quickly assembled in New Delhi. "You can't get that stuff in Vancouver, and it's significantly more expensive here," she notes. Jason and Kerry were determined that their wedding should reflect their personal style and preferences, while keeping within the traditions of a Sikh ceremony. "My philosophy was less is more," says Kerry, who eliminated as much as she could, keeping the important Indian customs and omitting the ones she felt to be outdated. She decided on an outdoor ceremony on the lawns of UBC's Cecil Green Park House. On their wedding day, brilliant orange and hot-pink ribbons and flowers moved in the September breeze around the shrine. "That Friday the weather was perfect," says Kerry, describing her and Jason's walk around the shrine. On their fourth time around they were formally married, and the temple choir broke into song. The couple's 200 guests cascaded them with petals and Jason and Kerry released butterflies into the air. "It was a really pretty moment, very surreal," she recalls. The following day, the couple held a dinner-dance reception at the Fairmont Pacific Rim that further combined elements of East and West. Kerry wore a white flowing gown inspired by Marchesa but with undeniable Indian flair, while she also designed colourful sari-like gowns for her bridesmaids. Dinner was an Indian-style menu that earned the raves of guests from both India and Canada. "Usually some guests complain that it's too spicy or not spicy enough, but this wasn't your typical butter chicken," notes Kerry. Guests dined on braised lamb madras, cod curry with oyster mushrooms, B.C. spot-prawn tandoori and chickpea masala, all prepared by the hotel caterers. That night Jason delivered a heartfelt speech honouring his parents. "I thanked them for how they'd helped at the wedding, and for their support of our decisions," he says. "We wouldn't have been able to have such a great wedding without both our parents' support, financial and emotional." rw real weddings SPRing / SUMMER 2013 p52-55_Kerry+Jason.indd 54 Dinner feast o style fa 13-04-22 11:10 AM The inv were d by one colleag
