salmon Steward magazine 5 T he Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund Society ( PSEFS) wa s founded in 2001 to ma nage a $30-million endowment fund established by the Government of Ca nada for Pacif ic sa lmon conser vation. Tha nks to a n additiona l $5-million top-up funded by the federa l government in 2019, the PSEFS is able to continue to operate a s a n independent entit y that pa r tners with the Pacif ic Sa lmon Foundation to help restore a nd conser ve wild sa lmon populations in British Columbia a nd the Yukon. With support from the Society, PSF is able to allocate more than 90 cents of every dollar donated directly to grants supporting restoration work and science-driven conservation projects. This support from the endowment fund covers most of PSF's capacity and core costs. In 2019, the Societ y continued its suppor t for new priorities outlined in PSF 's Strateg ic Pla n. These projects include ( but a re not limited to): • Contributing $300,000 to the Internationa l Gulf of A la ska Expedition, which a ims to study the mecha nisms a ffecting sa lmon in deep-sea environments of the Nor th Pacif ic Ocea n; • Providing $500,000 to the ex tension a nd expa nsion of the Pacif ic Sa lmon Explorer into new reg ions; • Directing over $325,000 towa rd sa lmon conser vation a nd restoration projects in the Yukon. The PSEFS wa s a lso a pa r tner in PSF 's Sa lish Sea Marine Surviva l Project (SSMSP), with a tota l pledge of $3.068 million between 2014 and 2019. Initiatives arising from the SSMSP include studies about nearshore habitats, eelgrass restoration and impacts on juvenile sa lmon surviva l rates. The Pacif ic Sa lmon Endowment Fund Societ y will continue to suppor t PSF into the future so that your dolla rs ca n be applied directly to the scientif ic resea rch conser ving a nd restoring Pacif ic sa lmon stocks. The Pacif ic Sa lmon Endowment Fund Societ y is ma naged by a n independent boa rd of directors. The Societ y bega n in 2019 with a fund ba la nce of $32.5 million a nd ended with a fund ba la nce of $40.4 million (including a $5-million top-up funded by the federa l government).
