Kole Lepoidevin Aaron Burkell PSF – SANDY MILLER FISHERIES AWARD Recipient: Kole Lepoidevin School: Vancouver Island University Volunteer: Puntledge River Hatchery Studying: Fisheries and Aquaculture Kole was born in Vernon but moved to Smithers when he was nine years old. His passion for salmon grew quickly and at age 15, he started working at a local fishing shop where he taught new anglers different techniques for reeling in salmon, fish handling and fishing regulations. Attending Vancouver Island University (VIU) seemed a natural fit. He's now in third year, and his areas of interest within the program include fisheries and environmental management, salmonid life history, habituate rehabilitation and studies of coastal ecology. Kole plans to pursue a career in managing, protecting or developing new ways to safeguard wild salmon stocks. "I am honoured to receive the Alexander 'Sandy' Miller PSF Award. This scholarship will help me move forward in my studies and eventually allow me to contribute to healthy populations of salmon species along the west coast of British Columbia." DR. BRIAN RIDDELL – PSF FISHERIES ENDOWMENT AWARD Recipient: Aaron Burkell School: Vancouver Island University Studying: Environmental and Fisheries Management In March 2019, past PSF President & CEO Dr. Brian Riddell received a unique retirement gift – an endowed scholarship in his name at Vancouver Island University (VIU). The scholarship will be awarded annually to an outstanding upper-level student studying wild salmon conversation and management at VIU. Aaron Burkell is the first recipient of the Dr. Brian Riddell – PSF Fisheries scholarship. Aaron is in his fourth year of studies and is focusing on environmental THE NEW STEWARDS 2019 PSF scholarship and bursary recipients The Pacific Salmon Foundation is proud to support a new generation of salmon stewards by providing cash awards to post-secondary students through our scholarship and bursary program; in 2019, 12 post-secondary students in B.C. from nine different communities received a total of $23,500.
