That is possible through technology known as Virtual Smile Design. Dr. Faraj Edher, prosthodontist at BC Perio Dental Health & Implant Centre, (owned by Dr. Bobby Birdi) points out that "The technology is proven but far from mainstream, and many people aren't aware that it even exists." "Fortunately, we've been utilizing virtual smile design at BC Perio for the past five years, giving our patients the ability to preview the result of proposed dental work and fine tune what their teeth will look like." Virtual smile design is revolutionary in the dental world and uses video, photos, augmented reality and other technologies to show patients the proportions and relationship between their teeth and lips and face – all of which work together to create the smile. Essentially, photos and videos are taken of every angle of the patient's mouth by a 3D intraoral scanner (a process that takes less than two minutes at BC Perio), and the data is imported into Virtual smile design software. Then, the dentist studies a library of forms and shapes that can be placed over the patient's teeth; once the selection is made, the patient can view the final effect from all angles on a laptop (only 15 minutes after the images were first captured) and either okay the selection or make suggestions. From there, the dental work begins. Edher says, "Virtual smile design really is a fantastic tool that eliminates surprises. Here at BC Perio it is most commonly used for veneer work, but it's useful in many other applications." Another huge benefit of BC Perio's Virtual smile design services is cost. "There is zero additional cost to the patient," says Edher. "We can even print the images so he or she can take them home to get feedback from family and friends." BC Perio has also been using another technology, Augmented Reality, which shares many of Virtual smile design benefits but is more appropriate for comprehensive dental procedures such as denture fitting or full mouth restoration. BC Perio employs some of the latest treatments and technologies performed by a skilled staff to help clients regain the ability to smile, chew, and speak comfortably. Edher concludes, "We've always invested in cutting-edge technology because we're committed to taking dentistry to the next level – and providing the best for our patients."■ Learn more about BC Perio Dental and Implant Centre at www.bcperio.ca The problem many people have with dental work is that it's unclear what the final result will look like. Wouldn't it be fabulous to see – and adjust if desired - the outcome before any work is actually undertaken?
