PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION – GOVERNMENT OF NUNAVUT 48 | DECEMBER 2019 interior airtight envelope and finished with metal corrugate and feature alu- minum panels. "And given the remote location, a mechanical system was designed to be robust, energy efficient, and easy enough to be maintained without having to bring in help outside of the community," says Wall. Rob Hellstrom, senior project man- ager for Kudlik Construction, says, "The school burned down in March of 2017 and site clean up happened between April and July of that year, after which construction of the new school began – it was an incredibly tight timeline." The sea barge delivery of 2017 included the steel structure, construction equip- ment, cement, rebar, roofing and envelope materials, plus blasting mate- rial for clean up of the site, which was exposed, fractured bedrock. "It was a massive undertaking just to get the steel skeleton in place," says Hellstrom, adding that since space was at a pre- mium, equipment and material had to be stored "throughout the community." Hellstrom also notes, "One day in September, 10 inches of snow fell, and weather conditions went downhill from there. Under these circumstances we had to hand pour the concrete foun- dations, using every available heating unit to keep the process moving." By the end of 2017 the design-build team was two months behind sched- ule. "However, we returned in May of 2018 to a very good spring, and we gradually recovered the lost time," says Hellstrom. A second barge delivery in the fall of that year "enabled us to do the finishing work, the panelling, the flooring, and mechanical/electrical in the work season of 2019." The Arviligruaq Ilinniarvik school was opened for the 2019 school year as planned on August 26, and Wall summarizes the sentiments of his colleagues by saying, "This is an absolutely incredible facility and a considerable source of pride for the design-build team. The community, government, and the team collabo- rated in an unprecedented manner to pull this off, and we couldn't be happier with the outcome."
