The West Coast design of the Centre includes glulam beams that are visible from the exterior of the building, in the pool area, and the upper level fitness area. "There are other structural sup- ports around the pool and fitness centre that include B.C. wood, and we included an acoustical barrier in the main lobby," says Nicolet. She adds they included glazing as a feature wherever they could. "We used some modern technol- ogy for energy efficiency. A curtain wall between the corridor and the leisure sheet allows users to see the entire rink, and in the recreation rink, part of the exterior wall is glass. People who are using ice enjoy looking outside." Another area that uses significant glazing is the fitness centre and pool area. The fitness centre looks down into the leisure pool so when people are working out they can see what is hap- pening in the swimming pool. There is also full-height glazing on the walls in the pool area that brings in a lot of natural light. The unique library design cantile- vers out with a post-tension slab. Fully glazed walls are also incorporated here. A noteworthy feature of Phase 1 is the Main Corridor that connects the main components of the building, pro- viding views through the entire facility from two levels. "It also includes a showcase fireplace for warmth on cold, rainy days. When the sun is out, the corridor is bathed in natural light through the continuous clerestory win- dows," says Nicolet.
