DECEMBER 2019 | 37 Molson Coors Brewery Yuste adds that the main entry and office has been differentiated as a two- storey glassy pavilion that is attached to the main facade of the brewery facing the highway. "Here we chose warmer materials such as honed con- crete block and wood grain phenolic panels, and articulated the facade walls and roof overhangs to set this office block apart from the expansive flat walls of the brewery building run- ning behind it," he says. Inside, the brewery and warehouse packaging area is located on one massive single storey that features an impressive mezzanine walkway that gives a bird's- eye view of the facility, while the office space is located on two floors. Having worked on a similar facility, Smith Bros. & Wilson understood that the best option inside would be to use a completely galvanized system which limited welding and doesn't require touch-ups. "The production area was designed with an open space concept to enhance visibility of the production pro- cess and improve efficiency," says Hook. For the offices, Molson Coors' mar- keting team branded all the white walls, which act as an attractive canvas. When it came to the mechanical and electrical systems, the facility fea- tures a state-of-the-art CO2 recovery system that will significantly reduce emissions. "A major component of the energy reduction effort was focused on minimizing the steam demand of the facility. With the technologies in place, we are now able to reduce overall aver- age steam usage in the brewery from the storage of our ingredients, to the brewing process and finally the pack- aging of our products," explains Hook. "The building itself makes us proud, inside and out. The modern technolo- gies implemented in this brewery will allow for more flexibility such as vol- ume, pack size, product types, and other factors that could present future growth opportunities." On September 17, 2019, Molson Coors officially opened its newest mod- ern brewery in the Fraser Valley and the building is on target to achieve LEED certification and to reach its goal of zero waste to landfill in the next few years. The new facility will also play a major role in the achievement of Molson Coors' Our Beer Print 2025 goals, which include a 2.8 hl/hl water to beer ratio. "Over the past three years the con- struction of the brewery resulted in over 1,000 jobs in Chilliwack. There will be approximately 100 employ- ees working at the new facility. We've already started our involvement with the community, and we are commit- ted to continuing to do our part. All this makes me proud," says Hook. "But what makes me even prouder is our brewing heritage, which is full of his- tory. Having been personally vested with this project from the beginning, it is incredibly rewarding to witness this modern brewery come to life. Throughout the project, I witnessed the incredible commitment from our employees, suppliers, customers, and stakeholders who helped us achieve this important milestone. I am con- vinced that years from now this project will still be a great source of pride for our company and our people."
