P R O M O T I O N A L F E AT U R E research library and educational facilities, a gift shop and the most extensive collection of Tulalip art and artifacts in the country. When completed, note native elders, the site's outdoor nature preserve will be "a place where land and water express the spirit of our people." (Of course, after exploring Tulalip's indigenous history, visitors are keen to sample its more contemporary offerings, too. The city's 110-store Seattle Premium Outlets mall is a must-stop for national brands – from Adidas to Zumiez – at discount prices, particularly during the holiday season.) In fact, this entire corner of Washington can be viewed as one giant web of museums, galleries and performing arts centres showcasing works by emerging and established world-class talent. Just 20 minutes south of Tulalip in Snohomish County is the latest shining star among these: downtown Everett's Schack Art Center, a state-of-the-art venue with gallery store, hot shop for glass art and flameand-kiln studio where art lovers can observe glass-blowers at work or take an art class. Another cultural jewel is the recently opened Washington Public Market in historic Snohomish, barely 25 km east of Everett on Hwy. 2. Formerly a community hall, the newly opened exposed-brick, wood-beamed site will eventually house nearly 200 vendors, including artists and and artisan food growers. Augmenting the market is its sister operation across the street: the Wine Cellars of Washington. The state's ever-expanding wine scene is certainly no secret, but this taster's destination is a first, with up to 25 wineries offering weekend tastings. Grape fans can also peruse the 80-plus wine-tasting rooms in famed Woodinville Wine Country, then overnight in neighbouring Bothell. The village makes wine weekends easy and affordable with "Sip & Stays" that include lodging, dining specials and complimentary tastings at select wineries. Between sips, meander the Country Village's garden paths past ponds and a day spa to 40 shops and restaurants for one-of-a-kind toys, gifts and antiques. ("Shop & Stay" packages include Premium Outlets and the Bellevue Collection.) Elsewhere in Bothell, cycle the Sammamish River Trail, relax into a Bastyr University wellness class, forage for local produce and plants at Yakima Fruit Market and Nursery or swing the day away at two nearby golf courses. ■ For details on these adventures and many more: Snohomish County Tourism (1-888-338-0976; visitor@snohomish.org; www.snohomish.org) 38 WASHINGTON TOURISM 2011 p36-38_Washington.indd 38 10/25/11 12:04:02 PM
