RENDERINGS COURTESY DHK ARCHITECTS INC. AUGUST 2019 | 45 The Summit at Quadra Village PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY CAPITAL REGIONAL HOSPITAL DISTRICT The Summit at Quadra Village by ROBIN BRUNET T he Summit at Quadra Village is something B.C. needs much more of: a 320-unit complex residential and dementia care facility in Victoria that replaces two aging hospitals. To pedestrians, The Summit appears as a mass of staggered build- ing facades swelling outward in the centre; an overhead view reveals this pattern to be replicated on the other side, with the two outward swells cre- ating a protective inner courtyard. Designed by dHKarchitects Inc. and Salter Pilon Architecture in a joint venture, The Summit's many benefits include private rooms with ensuite bathrooms and shower, an on-site hemodialysis clinic, secure outdoor spaces, and amenities such as a hair salon and physiotherapy room. Another remarkable feature about the four-storey, 225,000-square- foot facility is that it represents a unique collaboration between the Capital Regional Hospital District (CRD) and Island Health, the former of which developed the project under an integrated design delivery model on behalf of the latter. CRD will man- age the completed facility, and Island Health will operate it. Michael Barnes, senior manager of health and capital planning for CRD, says, "It was innovative for the district to be the long-term landlord for the health authority, but it will be an added value to taxpayers in that we own the land." Rob Whetter, architect at dHK, says, "The integrated design process com- menced in 2014, by which time the CRD had developed a facilities program out- lining key spaces, how big each space should be, floor plans, and related ele- ments – all of which helped dictate the shape of the building." Of the facility's esthetic appearance, Whetter says, "We decided to avoid the old fashioned designs you see in too many seniors facilities – which is why the outside cladding consists of corru- gated and preformed metal." For the interior, Salter Pilon Architecture Inc. – which with dHK undertook the design schematics
