AUGUST 2019 | 43 As with all four buildings, the archi- tects have created an intuitive flow that leads the visitor naturally from the outside in. "The entrance to the tower is defined by one of those new modules that cantilevers out toward the side- walk. This creates an amenity space within that module and compresses the entry canopy to the building. From that compressed space you enter into a lobby that suddenly opens up," says Harris. This entrance acts almost like the blink of an eye, where your eyes are suddenly opened with what you are about to witness. A white terrazzo floor contrasts beautifully with the architectural con- crete walls. The concierge desk, which is made of blackened steel, cantilevers 10 feet off of the core of the tower, a gorgeous curved blackened steel fea- ture stair takes you up to a music room with a custom Fazioli piano cantilever- ing off the wall, and beyond the main Vancouver House LOCATION 1400 Howe Street, Vancouver, B.C. Above the lobby, there are 375 homes, each unique in shape in keeping with the total design of the building. For the mechanical and electri- cal systems, Westbank has also been extremely forward thinking. The proj- ect features a district energy system by Creative Energy that provides the heat- ing and cooling for the neighbourhood. Returning to the public realm, and the Vancouver House construction team is currently installing a Rodney Graham public art installation, a Spinning Chandelier that will hang beneath the Granville Street bridge. On completion the chandelier will slowly rise throughout the day and drop, spinning dramatically downwards at a set time each night, in a vivid demonstration of Newton's explo- ration of rotational motion. In fact, the entire project is a work of art, from its creation to its completion. It has redefined the potential of archi- tecture to overcome challenges and create solutions. Westbank has a history of helping shape the evolution of neighbourhoods, and it's fair to say that with the help of an amazingly talented team they are about to do it again.
