AUGUST 2019 | 21 Metal Roofing/Cladding PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY HONCO STEEL BUILDINGS single source for quality flat-rolled metal products, including all types of steel and steel alloys, alumi- num, copper, and specialty or custom metals and finishing. The value-added services include slitting, cut-to-length levelling, and inventory programs cus- tom designed for individual customers. Cascadia Metals continues to expand both in product offering and now geographical footprint, with new distribution branches opening up in Mississauga, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec. Mark Friesen, director of sales and procurement for Cascadia, says one of his company's greatest assets is availability of product. "We have such a large inventory that customers can focus on their business instead of wondering where they're going to get their supply from," Friesen explains. He adds that the architectural metal market remains very strong, which is why Cascadia is con- tinuing to develop its product offering. "We have doubled our prepainted steel woodgrain product collection, adding to our painted aluminum colour palette, and we are expanding our current anodized aluminum range. Building trends are evolving with more metals being used per address and Cascadia's focus is on making sure that this material is readily available to the marketplace," says Friesen. Ontario Panelization's contribution to the metal roofing and cladding sector is Alcotex Aluminum Composite Material (ACM) panels, which have a low-density polyethylene core and are engineered flat, making them lightweight, rigid, and yet form- able, with a high bond strength and a superior CAN/ ULC fire rating. Ontario Panelization considers these panels to be ideal for complex project with many design elements, and they are equally useful in enclosing industrial buildings as they are to clad spandrel areas, columns, and beams. The benefits of Honco's steel buildings are well known, and its shell-unit steel buildings allow the company to offer simpler foundation, quick installa- tion, and construction cost savings. For commercial projects, Honco is adept at providing large clear span when application requires it; and column-free struc- tures for extra aisle space along the walls. Another benefit Honco provides is a 15 to 25 percent savings on operating costs with an energy- efficient building and its highly reflective structural ceiling finish. "We are actively trying to promote our reflective ceilings and emphasize the advan- tages, which are substantial," says Genevieve Filteau, Honco's marketing director. A highly reflective steel finish of the ceiling results in a distinctive bright interior. "Simply put, it's like an attic in a house: we insulate the ceiling, and you don't need to heat up spaces within the building you don't use," says Filteau. "The reflective properties of the ceil- ing provide an even distribution of light, which makes this perfect for sports arenas and warehouses." All of this is made possible by Honco's LEED cer- tified technology, which provides optimal thermal insulation efficiency obtained by a superior insulat- ing method that creates no thermal bridge, and by a well ventilated attic space that keeps the insulation permanently dry and totally efficient. The energy performance of the building envelope is increased by the structural ceiling finish, which reflects light and yet emits three times less radiant heat than materials such as wood and paint. Finally, the Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia (RCABC) has this year made substantive changes to its online RCABC Roofing Practices manual and standards, namely; a restruc- turing of the manual to make it more user friendly and easier to navigate; updated SBS (styrene-butadi- ene-styrene) standards; new wind uplift standards (CSA 123.21), applicable in the BC Building Code; and new RCABC metal roofing standards Judy Slutsky, RCABC's director of business devel- opment, says the updates are entirely in keeping with an association that constantly evolves to stay current: "We've been writing guarantees for over 50 years and developing roof guarantee standards for over 30, and our updated manual better reflects current industry practices and materials usage." She urges architects wanting to learn more about the Manual changes to attend one of the upcoming Earth, Wind, Metal pre- sentations, one of which will be staged on September 24 at the Marriott Victoria Inner Harbour.
