Millions of dollars of equipment is stolen annually from construction sites in Canada, with most equipment never being recovered. From losing expensive tools, machines, vehi- cles, accessories, and materials (like copper wires) on a construction site, to vandalism and damaged property, these loses can delay and affect the project schedule and revenue stream. Investing in the right security solution can drastically decrease the chances of a construction site falling prey to theft and vandalism. On-site security guards can be expen- sive and often ineffective. In the past, video surveillance was costly and not very smart. That's where remote construction site video monitoring comes in... an innovative solution that is both affordable and intelligent. This technology works using Advanced Learning Analytics, an advanced algorithm that understands the difference between motion and a threat to the construction site. This algorithm can tell the difference between an animal and a human. The system is also able to detect a threat in near-no-light conditions and can identify a person or a vehicle with a high level of efficiency and accuracy. When a threat is detected, a highly trained operator at the monitoring station verifies the threat and immediately escalates the response through voice-down technology. This voice-down technology enables the operator to proactively talk to the intruder and advise them to leave the site. Often this is enough to stop issues before they escalate. However if an intruder ignores the voice-down – a verified intruder and crime in progress report results in fast response from law-enforcement. (Most police and RCMP detachments across Canada require a verified threat or verified crime in progress before they will respond to an alarm. This means that a crime has to be underway and verified to be so by a human. This is partic- ularly dangerous to do in person and is actually far more effective to be done remotely.) If power on the construction site goes out or gets cut, the Operations Centre would immediately be notified that power is lost to a camera, but will continue operating as nor- mal on reserve power for 30 minutes. This is usually more than enough time to resolve the problem and is one of the many features that sets this system apart. This technology has proved extremely beneficial for Los Rois Storage, a storage facil- ity in Kamloops, BC with about 200 tenants. The company had purchased and installed a remote construction site video monitoring solution from Houle Electric Ltd. Early one morning, an intruder broke into Los Rois' storage yard. The authorized personnel at Los Rois was contacted immediately by Houle's Operation Centre and advised that police were en-route. With the live monitoring and talk-down feature, police was able to apprehend the intruder within minutes. All of Los Rois' customers possessions were intact and safe that day, thanks to the remote construction site video monitoring solution. Houle Electric Limited 604-434-2681 www.houle.ca ADVERTORIAL
