J UNE 2019 | 47 Etobicoke General Hospital Patient Tower provides a benchmark for wayfind- ing for visitors. We partnered with the Wellness Centre to ensure we had wayfinding pylons at that entrance of the building pointing to the two differ- ent facilities; the Wellness Centre and Etobicoke General Hospital," says Misa. Inside the building, visitors will be struck by the sharp architectural angles and the, at times, 17-metre floor- to-ceiling height in the atrium that makes the entrance feel open and invit- ing. "We were very aggressive with the angles because we felt it was owed geometry and character," says Misa. "The atrium is a rarity," adds Meana. "It's a large open bright space that is extremely warm and welcoming. The flaring cap and running longboard that stretches from one side to the other gives the Tower a great natural look and feel." The splayed roof is another archi- tectural point of interest, and one that, while a little challenging for Walsh Canada to construct, adds dimension and a distinctive quality to the addition. The connection to the outdoors was also a key design element of the Tower. No matter where you are in the building, you get a sense of continuity between the inside and outside. "We have a three-sided clere- story curtain wall so you can see the Humber Valley River and treeline from all angles. There is also a wood- look element in the atrium with faux wood materials that are non-combus- tible, and the steep structural splayed columns have wood insets to mimic the trees. The idea is that if you are in the public space looking to the exterior, there is a natural flow with the materi- als and colour palettes," says Misa. Each floor of the new Tower has been dedicated to its particular func- tion, from the emergency care on the main floor, up to the new Women's and Children's Unit. The Tower fea- tures state-of-the-art systems, for which MCW provided the mechanical and electrical engineering services, and acted as the energy modelling and LEED consultant. Attention was given to providing green space to patients and visitors with a welcoming outdoor patio, a sunken garden, and multiple green roofs that promise respite and a pleas- ant view for patients. As the hospital gets ready to open its doors, the team involved are extremely proud to have been part of a project that is so essential to the com- munities it serves. "The revitalization of Etobicoke General will play a significant role in ensuring this community has access to enhanced health-care services. The new wing will support the delivery of world-class emergency care, help us establish centres of excellence in high-priority areas, and provide space for vital services needed most by the growing community," says Brendan Carr, president and CEO, William Osler Health System.
