"We then provided a custom metal framing system sus- pended below the remaining islands of acoustic tile ceiling, which supported surface mounted linear light fixtures and an exposed cable tray." Duncan Mills, energy management specialist at Georgian College explains that sustainable building construction and energy efficiency principles are incorporated throughout the building for environmental students to study. "It's an energy-smart facility," says Mills, pointing to rooftop solar panels, a micro-grid display room, building auto- mation control system, LED lighting, and low-flow plumbing fixtures. "The build- ing was designed over and above the ASHRAE 90.1 standard and far exceeds the 2015 building codes by 20 percent." Hailed by the college as only the second such system in Canada, the building's ground-source geothermal central chiller heat pump plant reduces the amount of power needed to run tra- ditional systems. "Using geothermal also reduces wastewater from cooling tower systems usually incorporated into buildings of this type," notes Mills. Now complete, the building offers a bright future, suggests West-Moynes: "The Peter B. Moore Advanced Technology Centre will have an incred- ible impact on growing our regional economy, helping local businesses thrive, creating a powerful entrepreneurship climate, developing and enhancing prod- ucts that are manufacture-ready, and preparing a highly skilled workforce for the jobs of the future and today."
