J UNE 2019 | 29 Waterproofing 36 countries). "A nice feature about our membrane is that it contains 40 percent recycled content," says Denis Gingras, Hydrotech's national director of sales. Accompanying this product is the company's new Protected Membrane Roof Planning Guide, which strives to educate architects, engineers, general con- tractors, and other design professionals on the key benefits of a protected membrane roof versus a con- ventional roof, the technology currently available, and best practices for effective installations. The 6125 membrane is also extremely versatile: it has been successfully used on all types of horizon- tal and vertical structures, including plazas, parking decks, fountains, water basins, tunnels, bridges, mud slabs, foundation walls, roofs, and vegetated roofs, and blue roof assemblies. That's because it bonds tenaciously to an acceptable substrate, thus elimi- nating lateral migration of water. Also, the 6125 membrane has no seam and is typically installed six-millimetres thick in the fabric reinforced assem- bly – more than three times thicker than most other waterproofing membranes. Thickness is an impor- tant benefit in that 6125 exhibits the ability to self-heal and better accommodates developing cracks in a concrete substrate. The products from BASF are used in four main waterproofing technology categories: traditional bitumen emulsions; one- and two-component cementitious mortars and slurries; ready-to-use mastics; and anti-efflorescence agents for masonry. In certain applications, these fluid applied technolo- gies are preferred over conventional roll membrane sheets and over more costly reactive chemistries such as crystalline waterproofing and PU/polyurea/ epoxy-based systems. Acronal is a brand BASF has developed for the different waterproofing categories: for example, in mastics, the Acronal 4160 is an aqueous styrene- acrylic copolymer dispersion for creating versatile waterproofing membranes that resist standing water, withstand negative-side hydrostatic pressure, and prevent water intrusion, while the Acronal 541 exhibits good water resistance, outstanding tensile and elongation properties, and is fast drying with good adhesion and high pigment binding power. Moisture vapour treatments are a specialty of Maxxon Canada. The company has partnered with, and distributes, the Vaportight Coat line by Aquafin. This line consists of three products: Vaportight Coat SG2 is a two-component, moisture tolerant, high den- sity, chemically enhanced epoxy that prevents the passage of water vapour and moisture through con- crete floors and walls on or below grade; Vaportight Coat SG3 is also a two-component, moisture toler- ant, low viscosity, solvent free, chemically enhanced epoxy product that reduces the passage of water vapour and moisture through slabs on or below grade (thus eliminating delamination of adhesives, floor coverings, and coatings); and Vaportight Coat SG4 is a rapid-setting epoxy based product that reduces water vapour and moisture passage through slabs on, below and above grade as well as split slabs. Finally, Brian Salazar, national business develop- ment manager for Euclid Canada, is busy promoting a new waterproofing admixture, Eucon Baracade WPT, "a liquid added during the batching process that fills the capillaries of concrete and is ideal for architec- tural precast, concrete with colour, and other types of concrete work." By resisting moisture and chloride ion penetra- tion, concrete produced with Eucon Baracade WPT reduces the potential for scaling, spalling, and other moisture-related degradation. The visual appeal of decorative concrete can also be improved by using the product to decrease the potential for secondary efflorescence. Unlike topically applied sealers, Eucon Baracade WPT produces a chemically bonded and insoluble protection mechanism throughout the concrete mix, making it less susceptible to freeze-thaw and de-icing salt-related damage – as long as the concrete is prop- erly air entrained.
