Government Investment Spotlight 6 2019 psf.ca BIG ACTION FOR SALMON! Celebrating major investments in wild salmon by our federal and provincial governments Federal Fisheries Minister Jonathan Wilkinson (centre) and B.C. Minister of Agriculture Lana Popham (right) toured the Professor Kaganovsky. The Russian vessel was home to 21 scientists travelling the Gulf of Alaska for an unprecedented study on factors affecting wild salmon on the open ocean. DFO joined PSF as a funder of the expedition (p. 23). Two years ago, Fisheries Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced $1.2 million in funds over three years through the Coastal Restoration Fund at the Beaty Museum at UBC. Thanks to this support, the Pacific Salmon Explorer will continue to expand into other watersheds (p. 12). The Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund supports PSF's core costs, enabling more than 90 per cent of donations to be spent directly on salmon projects (p. 5). Late last year, PSF science advisor Dr. Brian Riddell attended the federal government's announcement of a $5-million contribution to top-up the fund. Green Party MLA Adam Olsen (bottom, second from right) and B.C. Minister of Agriculture Lana Popham (top, second from left) joined PSF staff at the South Vancouver Island Gala. Both MLAs are strong supporters of the Pacific Salmon Foundation and are vocal advocates in Victoria for wild salmon. For the first time in PSF's history, a premier attended our fundraising gala in Victoria. B.C. Premier John Horgan (fourth from right) with PSF staff took the stage that night for some inspiring words about increased collaboration with the federal government. One week later, the five-year B.C. Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund was announced comprised of $142.8 million from both governments. The fund will be open to conservation, Indigenous and research groups focused on projects to protect and restore wild salmon stocks.
