Customers were treated to oysters and beer from Rodney's Oyster Bar and Stanley Park Brewing, as well as an update from Dr. Brian Riddell on what we're learning through the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project. Just as community salmon conservation efforts depend on volunteers, so does PSF! And often these volunteers are one and the same. Terry Neyedi (yellow shirt) is a longtime committee volunteer with the Port Alberni Dinner & Auction as well as a member of the Alberni Valley Enhancement Association. Here he sells a key to Lois Leyenaar that could unlock a treasure chest to win an Islander MR3 Reel or ladies jewellery. South Vancouver Island Gala dinner committee volunteer and longstanding PSF donor Ward Bond gave the most enthusiastic cheers we've ever seen after taking his winning sip during the Lucky 7 auction. PSF supporters Bob Fraumeni, Andrew Purdy, George Cuthbert, John Douglas, Tom Burley and Donnie Jay joined Ward in the auction, which has become a fan favourite at many PSF dinners. Investors Group is a longtime sponsor of the Comox Dinner/Dance & Auction, and has grown their support through the years with the Salt Water Showdown benefit derby and as a partner in PSF's estate planning events (p. 7). The Powell River Dinner & Auction exemplifies the power of coordinated communities. Powell River is home to just 14,000 residents, but the town regularly reels in roughly $50,000 for salmon via its annual PSF dinner. This is largely due to the passion for salmon stewardship that runs strong in this community. Ed Oldfield (far left, pictured with wife Carmella) is president and volunteer for the Powell River Salmon Society; he also donates his high-end raku sculptures to PSF live auctions and volunteers through PSF's Citizen Science Program (p. 20). The Nanaimo Dinner, Dance & Auction brings together DFO scientists, the local angling community and students from Vancouver Island University (VIU) who volunteer every year. In 2018, we celebrated a landmark year for the Stewardship Community Bursary Program and honoured VIU recipients at the dinner. (Learn more about these students on p. 26.) From left: PSF's Dr. Brian Riddell; students Carson Jewitt, Jennifer Papineau, Mallory Blake and Heather Hewitt (Sandy Miller Award recipient); and Dr. Ralph Nilson, president and vice chancellor, VIU.
