Explore the small but mighty businesses that make up ground zero for Vancouver's zero- waste movement: The Soap Dispensary and Kitchen Staples, Nada Grocery and Balance Botanicals. Mount Pleasant M ount Pleasant is a must-meander for those interested in the city's idiosyncrasies, which abound in the independent cafés and boutiques found here. The very walkable 'hood follows the stretch of Main Street from Science World south to East 33rd Avenue, so do a little homework and choose a swath to tackle on foot. Fortified with an espresso from Milano Coffee, browse a curated selection of art, gifts and home-wares at Bird on a Wire Creations, then hunt for pre-loved threads at the many independent clothing shops along Main Street. Leave an hour (or three) for dim sum at Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant and spend the afternoon cruising the aisles of the half-dozen used book and record stores. Start your evening with a cool beverage and appies on the patio at El Camino's or The Reef. Locally sourced dining awaits at Burdock and Co., Fable, Nomad and Rocky Mountain Flatbread. (Vegetarians too have options aplenty with the likes of Acorn, Chickpea and East is East.) Dance late into the night at The Fox Cabaret or The Biltmore, or kick back with an expertly crafted cocktail at The Cascade Room. Don't worry about late-night munchies; spots like Congee Noodle House and Lucy's Eastside Diner have you covered into the wee hours. SANDY SIDHU The film and television actress grew up on Vancouver Island and grad- uated from the University of British Columbia before set- ting off for Hollywood where her roles have included Janet Dunleavy in Frozen in Love and Priya on Grey's Anatomy. Between shoots she makes her home in Vancouver. ¢ ¢ FIREWORKS: The Honda Celebration of Light is my favourite event. It happens annually in July and August. There is something so magical about a summer fireworks festival on the beach. ¢ ¢ HIGHER LEARNING: I take out-of-town guests to visit the University of British Columbia campus and get a Marbelous cookie from Blue Chip Cookies because they're that good. ¢ ¢ BABY GIFTS: My go-to store for newborn gifts is Hip Baby in Kitsilano. It's a locally owned boutique and they're always so friendly, have great products and give solid recommendations. ¢ ¢ HOME-GROWN TREAT: One must have a Nanaimo Bar! It's a beloved dessert – not to mention named after my hometown. RECOMMENDED: l Once the site of Brewery Creek, Mount Pleasant today hosts a clutch of craft brewers including Brassneck Brewery, Main Street Brewing Company, R&B Brewing, 33 Acres Brewing Company, Faculty Brewing Co. and Electric Bicycle Brewery. l Join Vancouver Toonie Tours' "Hipster Tour," which focuses on the public art, craft beer and quirky community spirit of Mount Pleasant. l Duck into alleyways and peer behind – and between – buildings for a self-guided tour of the city's most vibrant murals (map available online), many of them painted during the annual Vancouver Mural Festival, which takes place in the area during August.
