PUBLIC GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS At the Vancouver Art Gallery downtown, touring exhibitions complement more than 10,000 perma- nent pieces, including the largest collection of works of celebrated early 20th-century post- impressionist Emily Carr. Or cross the harbour on the SeaBus to The Polygon Gallery, a photographic and multimedia exhibition space that opened in North Vancouver in 2017. Still further north in Whistler, the Audain Art Museum presents an unmatched historical survey of the art of British Columbia, from 18th century First Nations masks to contemporary photo-conceptualism. Delve deeper into the city's history at the Museum of Vancouver. Its collection of artifacts and curiosities chronicle Vancouver's evolution from milltown to metropolis. PERFORMING ARTS The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019, makes its home in the Orpheum Theatre (worth a visit for its elaborate Moorish interior alone). Classical music can also regularly be heard at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia. The Vancouver Opera and Ballet BC, along with touring theatrical productions, perform at ANNE GIARDINI The chancellor of Simon Fraser University (SFU), novelist and former corporate executive shares a few of her favourite things. ¢ ¢ ARCHITECTURAL GEM: The newly refurbished Seaforth Armoury is an iconic Canadian Forces armoury at the south end of Burrard Bridge. The home of The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, a Primary Reserve Infantry unit, the armoury was designed by the architectural firm of McCarter and Nairne, and is a Class A Heritage Building. ¢ ¢ HIGHER EDUCATION: SFU's main campus is an architectural marvel. Dramatically situated at the top of Burnaby Mountain, the Arthur Erickson-designed complex has grown to include more than three dozen academic buildings. The new Sustainable Engineering Building at SFU's Surrey campus is also a must-see. ¢ ¢ JOURNEY: These days, you can find me – in my red varsity hoodie – walking or cycling along Vancouver's new Arbutus Greenway, or perhaps taking a trip across Burrard Inlet on the Seabus – the most fun you can have for under $5. ENTERTAINMENT OUTDOORS A Vancouver institution, the Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival pitches its tents at Vanier Park from spring to fall to offer a selection of plays. Open-air drama can also be found at Theatre Under the Stars at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. Music festivals that make use of waterfront green spaces include the Vancouver Folk Music Festival (July, Jericho Park) and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival (June-July, David Lam Park).
