"From a maintenance per- spective, it's going to change the bar for safety when it comes to dealing with high-work areas. I think any of our maintenance facilities going for- ward will likely be designed with platforms like that." Due to the building's magnitude – specifically, that of the hangar floor – the facility's fire detection and suppression systems include both a conventional water suppression system to protect the building, as well as a custom-designed system to protect the aircraft and accommodate the movable platforms. "We have designed a detection system that utilizes infrared flame detectors that are located around the hangar perimeter as well as the ceiling proper to monitor the floor area," explains Ken Baird of LRI Engineering Inc. (LRI). "The operation of two flame detec- tors will initiate foam spray monitors located around the parameter of the hangar, to spray onto the hangar floor and put out any fire," he adds, noting that special drain capabilities and catch areas have been incorporated into the building's design to drain any fire-suppressing Aqueous Film- Forming Foam (AFFF) separately from the main drainage system. The building is set to be fully opera- tional by June 2019, concludes Warren.
