66 | A PR IL 2019 Stanton Territorial Hospital Kasian and the P3 team fulfilled programming requirements for 100 single-patient rooms, an emergency department, and medical laboratory larger than that of the original hospital, additional space for diagnostic imag- ing, and improved medical technology. The design also included additional space for ambulatory care, including specialist clinics, medical day care and dialysis; and more space for support services, such as sterile reprocessing and biomedical engineering. One of Kasian's main objectives was to consult with user groups from across the Northwest Territories to ensure that the new hospital would meet the cul- tural needs of the north. The input the interior design team received resulted in each floor being coded by animal, colour, and topography endemic to the NWT, to help visitors quickly ori- ent themselves (for example, level one is represented by aurora borealis, the colour turquoise, and the polar bear as the over-arching concept that is unique to the territories). Another unique fea- ture designed by Kasian is an in-house spiritual care room with the capacity to host smudging ceremonies. In October of 2015, Bird and Clark commenced construction on the new hos- pital, which would see the installation of biomass boilers (as the main heat source), with dual fuel boilers as back up and a 30 percent spare capacity on selected major mechanical and electrical systems. Badari praises the builders for their skill in meeting schedule deadlines on time. "This is a region of short summers and long, cold winters, but substantial completion was achieved by November 30 of last year," she says, adding that ren- ovation of the original hospital will be undertaken over the next several years in order to establish a campus of care on site. She concludes, "The new facility and the redeveloping and repurposing of the existing facility will provide health care and diagnostic services for the NWT and the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut – approximately 50,000 people."
