32 | A PR IL 2019 Doors R E I M A G I N I N G S P A C E To meet a growing demand for maximizing space, manufacturers of sliding door hardware have made big esthetic upgrades to their exposed tracks and rollers, helping turn sliders into showpiece openings. "As designers strive to get the most out of every square foot of space, many are using sliding doors in place of swing doors," says Mainprize. "This helps free up floor space that would otherwise need to be clear for a door's swing path." The Catch'N'Close system from KN Crowder is one prime example – the design uses a gas spring to gently cushion the door in the last few inches of travel when opening or closing, eliminating the noise and impact from fast-moving sliders, protecting the door, hardware, and user. The versatility of some door designs today means that you have units that can function as a door or a window. "We have a number of 'cross-over' applications where we have used our high-performance doors and put them in window openings. Balcony doors are essentially a large tilt-and-turn window with a door threshold," notes Speier. "These doors are wonderful for ventilation because of the added tilt in function." Every year, Zola Windows builds bigger and broader lift and slide doors and breeze panels to allow customers a truly seamless indoor- outdoor experience, and similarly, the company's Breeze Panel doors in kitchen windows are a popular option too; a lift-slide window can offer a great view over a kitchen sink and open up for a large, unencumbered opening. These oversized doors make a serious statement and add curb appeal, and year over year the scale is creeping up and up. "We are seeing more requests for doors up to eight-feet high and as wide as 42 inches," says Taylor. Colour is another way buyers are making their front doors pop. "Again, this comes back to owners making a design statement on the front of the home," says Taylor. He points to deep red, black, and beige as popular colour options, but brighter shades like lime green and bright orange are trending too. When it comes to wood grain slabs, however, colours tend towards greys and neutrals. "We see a movement towards a Scandinavian colour pallet," says Taylor. The Catch'N'Close system from KN Crowder.
