Thats because it was going to be hung on the edge of the floor slab, and if it hadnt been modified it would have caused deflection problems with regards to the slab. Reducing the projection was accomplished simply, by reducing the thickness of the concrete, says Gasdia. The precast frame was fixed to the cast-in-place concrete wall with welded steel anchors. Core designed the lobby to impart a raw, organic feel, according to Gane, and a stand-alone entrance canopy provides extra visual appeal, although Gasdia remarks, the canopy is thin with thin columns, and it took a bit of extra care to develop it as structurally robust. For the construction portion of the project, Sorbara went in-house. We were able to maintain better control of the schedule and quality of work by managing the construction activities ourselves, explains highrise construction director Greg Tanzola. We have a very experienced construction management team and we take pride in focusing on the details and exceeding our customers expectations. Gasdia was impressed by Sorbaras construction prowess. They built the first three floors in roughly the same time it took to build the basement, and since floors four to seven were the same layout the process unfolded even more quickly: if Im not mistaken, it took just four weeks for that portion of the building to be completed. He adds: Sorbaras work was outstanding considering there were at least a half-dozen other condos being built in the immediate vicinity. The neighbourhood was a mess, and concrete had to be delivered as early as possible in the morning so the mixers wouldnt get stuck in traffic. 32 Camden p64-67_32Camden.indd 67 Peter Heyblom, a partner with thinc design and 32 Camdens lead landscape architect, says a fanciful curved wall would have originally served as an entry feature and buffer to the street, but it had to be scrapped due to site constraints. In its place will be large deciduous trees and planting beds as a beautiful addition to the public realm while providing a translucent screen to the street. Plus, the planting beds will also contain LED lighting that can be colour-programmed for different events and seasons. Gasdia views 32 Camden as a good example of what can happen when all parties work harmoniously together. Gane agrees. Although smaller residences are less cost effective than the average 30- or 40-storey condos because theres little repetitive design and construction, he concedes that with 32 Camden, Sobara did a nice job. courtesy core architects inc.
