The centre, designed by the famed Bauhaus architect, is one of the citys architectural jewels and its owner, Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited, is keen to ensure that the refit not only makes it a premier spot in terms of a business address, but that these treasured structures stand tall in the 21st century. Cadillac Fairview has a long history and commitment of reinvesting in its properties, and as one of the companys flagship office and retail complexes, the TD Centre is certainly no exception, says David Hoffman, general manager of the TDC. The centre has undergone previous infrastructure renewal cycles to ensure building components and technologies are leading edge and the revitalization will provide a fresher, more energy efficient and more modern look to the space. It will solidify our commitment to sustainability and the preservation of the property the current work will support meeting LEED Gold for Existing Building standards, he adds, which is a certification we have achieved at three towers, with a plan of achieving certification in all six towers by 2014. T Most recently, the tower at 77 King Street West underwent a major restoration and upgrade, attaining LEED Gold certification under the Existing Buildings Operations and Maintenance category, the first of its kind presented by the Canada Green Building Council. The tower at 79 Wellington Street West has similar certification. The $60-million project (two phases) began in June 2011, and is expected to be primarily complete in May 2013. The revitalization will implement a variety of projects that will improve tenant comfort and enhance energy efficiency, while maintaining the historical integrity of the building, says Hoffman. Project highlights include: the replacement of single-paned windows with double-insulated ones with window roller shades; refinishing the exterior steel; exterior facade painting and sealant; induction unit replacement; upgrades to the elevators (elevator cabs) and escalators; new washrooms; the relocation of perimeter induction units from the floor to the ceiling; and the renewal and restoration of a plaza a major public space in the district. Toronto-based B+H Architects is designing and supervising the TDC revitalization. We were part of the original design team that worked in association with Mies van der Rohe and John B. Parkin Associates back when these towers were first designed, says Neal Barkhurst, B+Hs principal in charge of TD Bank Tower Revitalization 13-01-22 4:08 PM
