FEBRUA RY 2019 | 15 Restoration Products & Services PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY EUCLID CANADA Euclid Canada continues to live up to its reputa- tion for providing solutions that address intricacies of repair work, "such as substances that inhibit corro- sion of rebar within concrete that is being repaired or replaced; and concrete that can be applied vertically or even overhead in situations where ruined con- crete in structures is removed and must be filled in," according to Brian Salazar, the company's national business development manager. Eucon CIA is a corrosion inhibiting admixture containing a minimum of 30 percent calcium nitrite, which is added to the concrete during the batching process; this inhibits the corrosion of steel reinforce- ment in concrete because the alkalinity of the pore solution promotes the development of a corrosion resistant film called the passivating layer on the rebar. EucoRepair SCC FAST is a versatile, one component, self-consolidating repair mortar that is shrinkage- compensated, pozzolan and microfibre modified; it contains an integral corrosion inhibitor and is designed for horizontal and formed vertical/overhead structural repairs in applications from one inch to full depth where a faster return to service is required. Dryvit is another company excited about a new product that, when fully rolled out in Canada, will not only prove to be a major asset to the restora- tion industry, but "will revolutionize the masonry industry overall," according to Eric McCathie, sales associate for Dryvit Systems Canada. The engineered NewBrick from Dryvit is being marketed in the U.S. as "the biggest innovation in brick, ever" and enables restorers (and builders in general) to get the exact look of a specific brick with- out the weight, hassle, and cost associated with traditional clay brick. "We've taken advantage of the fact that traditional brick really hasn't changed all that much in 9,000 years," says McCathie. NewBrick weighs only 2.45-pounds per square foot before mortar and can reduce energy bills because thermal insulation is built into the product. It eliminates ties, pans, and shelf angles, significantly reduces load-bearing footings, eliminates thermal bridging, and compresses exterior construction schedules. Exact matching is possible by a physical sample being sent to the NewBrick sample depart- ment, which reviews the sample for feasibility and pricing. For projects not requiring customization, NewBrick comes in 16 standard solid colours plus four colour blends. NewBrick in the U.S. was recently used to ren- ovate the Nashville High School campus, built in 1891. The owners of this private academy decided to renovate their football stadium from a CMU block to match their adjacent practice field centre made of thin brick veneer (renovating the field and stadium with conventional thin veneer wasn't fea- sible as the footings wouldn't withstand the weight of clay brick, and digging new footings wasn't an option either). NewBrick proved to be the ideal solution, solv- ing functional as well as esthetic requirements (the product won't crack like a clay brick if it's impacted). Plus, because NewBrick is so much lighter than thin brick, work crews were able to install it a lot faster. "Currently the product is being field tested in Canada, and we expect it will make a huge splash in the resto- ration and other sectors," says McCathie. However, thin masonry remains an extremely popular option for exterior renovation or restora- tion, for its esthetic appeal and lifetime durability, and Arriscraft's Thin Stone line is popular because it approximates the look of full bed stone but provides the ease of installation of thin stone. Arriscraft in Canada is introducing new colours for its Coastal and ARRIS.tack products, and while lit- tle information about the new colours are available, they will be unveiled this month. Professionals who rely on a vast colour palette will attest that Arriscraft is constantly expanding its offerings: in 2018 alone its new colour options included Laurier Opal, Shadow Stone Collingwood, and Tumbled Vintage Brick Weathered Oak.
