O ver 20-plus years, Raj Babber has built his career in mortgage finance on the foundation of solid lender relationships. As the principal mortgage broker and owner/president of CLN Mortgages in Toronto, he leads a small, highly skilled team of mortgage professionals that caters to the firm's loyal client base. With the goal of obtaining the best products and lowest possible rates, Babber's team not only structures mortgages, but also arranges loans and builds homes through the company's CLN Finance and CLN Developments divisions. Collectively called CLN Group, the company's reach may be wide, but its approach is targeted. It's all about putting people in homes, says Babber. And it all starts with his passion for the industry that makes it all possible. CANADIAN MORTGAGE BROKER (CMB): Tell me about your career. When and how did you get started in the mortgage industry? RB: I have spent my professional life in the banking industry. I worked as a loans officer at Canada Trust while I was in university. From there, I continued my career in the banking world, working with Bank of Montreal, Canada Trust and then joining CIBC to handle private wealth management clients. I found the lending side appealed to me more than the investment side. Canada Trust asked me to come back and work on their mortgage sales force, which I did for about three years. I predicted quite early in the game that being a broker would be ideal because you could approach various lenders to get a deal done.
