DECEMBER 2018 | 15 PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY EUCLID ADMIXTURES Concrete systems that use a carbon fibre grid to create precast elements that are more resilient, more sustainable, and more versatile than conventional precast or com- peting systems. As for the future, Carson says, "We continue to promote system-efficient technology and innovation, and a lot of exciting things are coming down the high- way. You will be hearing more from us in the near future for certain." Kingspan Kooltherm offers an extensive range of premium performance insulation products for wall, floor, soffit/structural ceiling, and concrete sand- wich wall system applications. It has a fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic insulation core that resists both moisture and water vapour ingress, and exhibits excellent fire performance. Plus, with an R-value of up to 17 per two inches, these are the thinnest com- monly used insulation products on the market today. One item of news coming from Lafarge Canada Inc. in 2018 is that Lafarge has opened an interactive showroom/demonstration space in New York City's Brooklyn Navy Yard for its UHPC Ductal products. This is appropriate as the Ultra-High Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete product line has expanded with a new formula that is applied by spraying on vertical walls, vaults and complex structures. For 25 years, UHPC formulas have improved to provide innovative solutions for construction contrac- tors. As a UHPC expert for over 25 years, LafargeHolcim has developed the first UHPC Ductal Shotcrete, which expands the use of UHPCs to vaults and vertical walls, making it possible for contractors to be free from expen- sive casings and complicated installation of connectors as required by the conventional poured or sprayed con- crete techniques. Ductal Shotcrete has exceptional resistance to chemical and mechanical damage and is 100 times more durable than conventional concrete. Of the New York showroom, Kelly Henry, Lafarge's architectural business development manager, North America, says, "We created this space for the design community across North America: it's a place where architects can come and see our Ductal products first hand, with the expectation they will be inspired to use them in their designs." Henry adds, "Ultimately, we want to proliferate the showroom/demonstration space concept and will hopefully open other venues in other cities in the foreseeable future." As the concrete sector is busy in 2018, so too are auxiliary businesses such as those specializing in admixtures, and in the realm of concrete use for large surface areas such as warehouses, Brian Salazar, national business development manager for Euclid Canada, is noticing a trend "of extended joint spacing floor spacing upwards of 50 feet, rather than typi- cal 15 to 18 foot sawcuts, which are put into floors to control cracking and are really the Achilles heel of concrete floors." The reason for this trend is, to a degree, esthetic, but mainly practical: "Running heavy machinery can wear down these joints," explains Salazar. A solu- tion for those requiring advanced floor designs is the Euclid Chemical 752HP Floor System, a high flexural strength, low shrinkage, high-performance, fibre-rein- forced concrete floor designed to extend joint spacing, reduce curling, and improve lifetime serviceability.
