DECEMBER 2018 | 37 PHOTOGRAPHY BY WOODRUFF-BROWN ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY/COURTESY ALUFLAM NORTH AMERICA Fire Protection Systems A big part of Chubb Edwards' versatility is due to its propensity to work directly with clients. Its total security solution includes start-to-finish continu- ing care, including on-site service, as part of a maintenance program or as needed. Security solutions from Chubb Edwards can include intrusion detection, access control including biometrics, video surveillance, and mass notification. Under the safety banner, Chubb Edwards continues to be a significant provider of graphic annunciation and mass notification systems: the former consists of Fireworks, an event-driven control interface that automatically prioritizes all sys- tem events so that the most urgent information is always front-and-centre. The latter, which can be integrated with many existing security and life safety sys- tems, allows users to quickly share critical information across multiple media, allowing individuals to keep clear of danger. Chubb Edwards also utilizes the power of wireless technology to offer owners the option to engage with their systems using smartphones, tablets or personal computers and its Chubb Connect app. Users can remotely view their alarm system status, arm or disarm it, and monitor activity via live or recorded video. Vipond Inc. is another complete package solution provider, with fire detection and suppression, security systems, and inspections among its services. It designs, installs, tests, inspects, and services alarms, fire detectors, sprinklers, and spe- cial hazards systems. It is also uniquely qualified and experienced in the layout and installation of all types of foam systems, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, specialty gas suppression, specialty and early-warning detection, and water-mist systems. Vipond continues to be recognized for its Onyx Series Addressable Systems, which includes three powerful intelligent control panels (the NFS-320, NFS2-640 and NFS2-3030) that are easy to program and install. They are also backward compatible, contributing to their effectiveness. The Onyx Series products also link together to create integrated solutions for any fire safety application. Aluflam North America's reputation has been gained by being a leader in fire-rated aluminum/glass construction, and for its top-of-the-line vision doors, windows, and glazed wall systems. Fire-rated glass assemblies with minimal assembly and framing are increas- ingly sought in the commercial design field that tends to emphasize clarity and glazing; but Jerry Cucchi, sales manager for Aluflam, points out that fire-rated glazing assemblies are usually one of the last items to be installed in a building project: "The problem with that is fire-rated glazing assemblies can be one of the longer lead time items on any project. This can affect the turnover of a building as you can't get occupancy unless these items are in place and signed-off on. We recommend starting early." Finally, Adler Insulation Ltd. and Adler Firestopping Ltd. are two of the largest commercial providers of mechanical insulation and structural fire protection in Western Canada, with offices in Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, and Vancouver. In B.C. it has provided its full range of services for the Okanagan College's Centre of Excellence, while in Alberta its firestopping/fireproofing work has been applied to the Shaw Campus Data Centre in Calgary and many other facilities. What distinguishes Adler Firestopping from similar companies is that it's one of the first companies in Western Canada to have enrolled in the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada's Firestop Contractor Program. This designation is important to developers, as it has been estimated that 56 to 58 percent of most firestop systems in the U.S. are non-compliant – and although studies have not been done in Canada, experts say these numbers would probably apply north of the 49th parallel.
