OCTOBER 2018 | 67 PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE PRATT/ COURTESY NUMBER TEN ARCHITECTURAL GROUP Another achievement with the STTC is the mechanical system. According to Epp Siepman Engineering Inc., the main mechanical systems are based on a hybrid energy source of well-to-well geothermal heating and cooling, sup- plemented by central plant steam. The cooling system uses untempered well water when conditions are favourable, eliminating compressor-based refrig- eration altogether. The non-workshop spaces are conditioned with a high- efficiency DOAS system coupled with a combination of active chilled beams. David Epp, a founding partner of Epp Siepman, says, "The original RFP included a requirement to investigate the use of geothermal. As it turned out, an aquifer ran underneath the building site that we could tap into with an open well system consist- ing of two 10-inch diameter wells that would provide a flow of 500 gal- lons per minute to the heat pumps and furnace, and further saving energy on the cooling side by bypassing the chiller during the cooling seasons." Epp Siepman also used active chilled beams for heating/cooling control in the classrooms and offices. As for the construction process itself, Akman says, "We had typical Manitoba weather for the majority of the construction: long cold winters, hot dry summers, and wet shoulder seasons." Unsurprisingly, the glulam beams for the project were a main architectural feature and had to be wrapped and protected for the course of construction. Project manager Frank Koreman adds, "We had six different mechanical systems all working together [steam, geothermal, gas, electric, hydronic, passive, and active chilled beams]. We overcame this challenge by work- ing with our design assist mechanical, electrical trades, and the consultant team to review any gaps and over- laps in systems and diligently working towards appropriate solutions."
