CMB MAGAZINE cmba-achc.ca summer 2018 | 25
the Office of the Superintendent of Financial
Institutions (OSFI) this year are challenging.
Over the last few years, every change that has
come about has caused a bit more effort on our
part to learn and adapt. It's definitely become a bit
more of a challenge to put together an "A" deal,
but it's also an opportunity for brokers to grow
their business. Now, more than ever, our business
is relevant. People still need to buy homes,
refinance and have debt. We're finding that
we must re-educate our clients (especially past
clients) about the changes, and plan for the
future more. It is now more hands-on, even
aer their mortgage closes.
CMB: how do you personally strive
for excellence?
KM: I'm a huge advocate of ongoing
education. I really believe that you should take
advantage of every opportunity you have to
learn. I am constantly providing educational
programming to my agents, such as bringing
in speakers, and I encourage them to go out
to different industry training sessions as much
as possible. I want to see my team doing their
best and sharing with each other so they can
be at the top of their game.
CMB: What advice would you give to
those just starting out in the industry?
KM: I would tell them to be patient. Mortgage
brokering can be very rewarding personally
and financially. Have a great plan and
keep working at it; don't give up. Don't get
discouraged aer a few months! Find great
people to work with; have accountability
partners and a great mentor.
CMB: Do you feel you have broken
any new ground during your career?
if so, how?
KM: I've been very involved in this industry.
I am the CMBA Ontario president. I guess
I have made some strides with being from
Ottawa, which is outside the traditional
Toronto geographic scope. Also, my brokerage
is known for its excellent mandatory training
program, with full-time mentors available
to new agents all the time.
CMB: What's on the horizon for you,
career-wise?
KM: I will continue to grow my business.
I'm looking forward to expanding the team
by four or five new agents each year. I have a
great team in Toronto that I want to continue
growing. I also find it very exciting that we
now have second-generation people coming
on board; we have about 10 to 12. I love to see
young people choosing this industry and I see
myself mentoring them in the years to come.
Mentorship is key.
CMB: What are some of the hobbies
you enjoy in your spare time?
KM: I'm an avid reader. I like to read
marketing and business books. My biggest
hobby is golf. I get through the winter so that
when spring gets here, I can golf a few times a
week. I'm not good by any means, but it's my
favourite thing to do. I'm also heavily involved
with association work.
