The system is also designed for expansion and program- ming changes, thanks to clusters of power panels located in key areas. As with any addition, however, there were challenges in connecting new sys- tems to old. Luckily, there was enough power in the McIntyre building, but when there was demolition work between the Greenstone and McIntyre buildings, critical communications cabling from the Greenstone still had to be maintained, while allowing con- struction of a new building on top of them. As well, the fire alarm system throughout all three buildings have to function as one, including matching the alarm sound throughout. Matching the exterior esthetics was also top of mind. Norm Lawrence, bridging architect with Keewatin-Aski Ltd. says, "One of the challenges was the location between the two existing older buildings, but we clad the exteri- ors in the same material, so the overall appearance is seamless." Other challenges with the build included an extremely tight building site, a faculty strike, and a last-minute roof redesign when it became appar- ent that the north winds were causing snow to drift onto the Greenstone roof beyond its load capacity. Jamie Froese, project manager with Penn-co Construction Canada (2003) Ltd. explains: "There were some issues with the roof design, figuring out how to support the snow loads on the old roof. We had to reinforce the roof with C-channels over the existing roof sys- tem. Then the trusses went on those C-channels, for a snow shed on the new Greenstone building that would dis- perse the snow loads properly." In spite of these hiccups, the proj- ect ran relatively smoothly according to the entire team. Madder notes that the purpose of the facility is to inspire innovation and collaboration among students, employees, and the commu- nity by offering the most advanced learning spaces and equipment. "With the rapid changes we are see- ing in industries and technologies, the TEC Hub has been designed to remain adaptable to the constant evolution of our learners' needs. Together with our project partners, we have cre- ated a modern and flexible facility that combines traditional Indigenous technologies and teachings with state- of-the-art equipment, skills training, and maker spaces. This will support graduates who are well prepared for the workforce in our region and beyond," says Madder.
