AUGUST 2018 | 27 Metal Roofing/Cladding Series 300 also reduces material waste since each piece of a cut panel can be used for the opposite sides of a detail condition; but arguably its biggest advan- tage is that in the event a panel needs to be removed or replaced, only that panel needs to be removed – not every other panel between it and the roof's edge. Darren Smith, Engineered Assemblies' national sales manager, Canada/U.S., says, "We are very involved in helping with the creation of high-performance assembly systems that are appropriate not just for the commercial and industrial sectors, but also for critical usages such as police or military facilities. That's why we're in partnership with IMETCO, which we regard as an extremely forward- thinking company. "In fact, we're currently building a community centre with IMETCO that involved shipping material to Iqaluit last September for a construction starting this May. In addition to the severe weather conditions in that region, the centre will be close to the ocean, but we're confident the Series 300 system will with- stand the cold and the salt better than any other roofing system." Business in the metal roofing and siding sector in 2018 is so brisk that Cascadia is currently undergoing an expansion of its facilities in Delta, B.C., that will effectively double its size, for a total of 220,000 square feet. "This is in order to better serve our Western Canadian customers, since business today is all about getting the metal to them at the times they require; it's no longer good enough just to have the metal in stock," says Friesen. "Along with this physical expansion, we're adding processing capacity thanks to the introduction of a second slitter as well as a surface-critical cut-to-length line." This is in addition to Cascadia expanding its pre-painted aluminum colour palette as well as those of its wood grain patterns. "While our client base is the West, our speciality pre-painted products such as printed steels, Cascadia Tex and our wide selection of standard PVDF colours are becoming increasingly prevalent in the eastern market," notes Friesen. Lastly, south of the border, Wes Brooker, VP of marketing at American Buildings Company, reports that one area of growth for his firm is supplying metal roofs to schools "built with standard flat roofs that only last 10 or so years. We undertake a structural analysis of each school and then install framing on top of the existing roof, then our metal roof goes on top of that. This has become big business for us, and I see no reason why it shouldn't also become big business in Canada, especially considering the harsh weather that puts extra stress on roofing structures." Brooker adds that one advantage of his company's roofing systems is that "they all have heat reflective coatings, which come from technology used to protect the stealth bomber in flight. This allows for substantial heat deflection to be achieved even when dark colours are applied: up to 40 percent deflection for dark and up to 80 percent for white." Unsurprisingly, Brooker is an enthusiastic metal roof advocate and has written extensively about the importance of using roofing solutions appropriate to the structure as well as installation that focuses on the critical elements (stability, gaskets and sealing, and fastening and attachment) that contribute to successful deployment and weathertight performance. He concludes, "The average 50-year lifespan of a metal roof far exceeds the performance of comparable asphalt and Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer solutions, making return on investment of the metal roof a far superior performance selection that also increases the financial value of the structure. "As fuel and energy costs continue to rise, the metal roof system may be the proper application for design build projects where cost-effective and energy efficient roofing solutions are required."
