AUGUST 2018 | 25 Metal Roofing/Cladding PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY ENGINEERED ASSEMBLIES INC. Elemex's work as a consultative partner was most recently evident during the Canada Science and Technology Museum of Ottawa renovation, which required envelope upgrades, new mechanical and electrical systems, seismic upgrades, new entrance facilities, and overall esthetic enhancements. The 80,000-square-foot exhibition space required an impressive exterior to represent the world-class experience contained within, and collaboration between the designers at NORR Ltd. and the technical team at Elemex was essential to ensure that the facade would achieve expectations. Research aimed at advancing construction excellence is of course a bailiwick of the Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia (RCABC), as are initiatives that address the workforce. New in 2018 is the Master Roofer Designation, which recognizes roofers who are working for RCABC member companies and have excelled in the industry. They must obtain 30 continuing education hours annually to stay up-to-date with industry progression and changes. Applicants for the designation must have Red Seal certification and 3,600-hours work experience. Hamish Matheson, RoofStar Technical Advisor for RCABC, says, "As part of the building envelope, properly designed and installed roofing is more important than ever due to the tougher new code requirements in our industry." Maximizing building efficiencies is a perpetual RCABC concern, and on that score the association is focusing on determining the effective R-value of insulation, meaning the actual performance value as it is affected by different temperatures, rather than the fixed R-value a product is branded with. Matheson says, "We're focusing on the actual performance of mineral wool, polyisocyanurate, and extruded polystyrene, and by the end of this year we'll have results pertaining to their precise performance characteristics. This information is intended to benefit design authorities in different regions, with regards to the BC Energy Step Code objective of making all buildings Net Zero efficient by 2032, and the City of Vancouver's intent of bringing that objective to fruition by 2020 for all new residential construction." RCABC is also working with WorkSafeBC, to develop an Exposure Control Plan (ECP) program to mitigate worker risk to hydrocarbon-based products commonly used in the roofing and cladding sector. "By collaborating with WorkSafeBC on behalf of the roofing industry, we hope to deliver a series of ECP plans for common roofing systems that will provide a common sense approach to worker safety," says Matheson. "Products and technology continue to evolve. Considering there are over 750 hydrocarbon-based components identified within roofing adhesives, sealers, primers, mastics, and cleaners with a wide variety of VOC levels, we think this project will have a positive outcome for our industry." Engineered Assemblies, which has famously united the discipline of design with the discipline of construction, is the exclusive distributor of the IMETCO Series 300 metal roofing system, a standing seam system with vertical legs that are equal in both size and profile, and a separate seam cap that joins the panels – meaning it can be installed starting from any point on the roof to produce a sleek, balanced, proportional look that complements any design. Since there are no interlocking male/female seams to worry about, Series 300 panels can be installed in either, or both, directions at any time. As a result, roof pro- trusions and other detail work will not disrupt installation: crews can simply move around the obstacle and continue working, then return to insert missing panels later.
