AUGUST 2018 | 17 PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY DEMILEC CANADA INC. with no mechanical joints or seams to worry about. "Construction crews can walk and use wheelbar- rows without any damage to the underlying radon and vapour barrier spray foam after it has cured," says Cole. A key benefit of the use of the RCS is the over- all cost benefit. As a single monolithic material that provides the performance of multiple control layers that would often require the use of many prod- ucts, it provides an unmatched price/performance level. "Frankly, having undergone rigorous testing in Ottawa, we have a great opportunity to market our foam across Canada, plus we have 425 CUFCA- certified contractors who can install the product," says Cole. Demilec Inc. is another trusted source for spray applied polyurethane foam insulation. Its products have been in use for over 30 years, and recently the com- pany received CCMC approval confirming the Heatlok Soya/PolarFoam Soya spray foam insulation meets National Building Code of Canada 2010 and 2015 for use with select membranes and primers. This means when installed as per manufacturer's instructions by a trained contractor, Heatlok Soya/PolarFoam Soya is suitable for use as an air barrier system. Tom Harris, VP for building science at Demilec, says the foam was tested at high pressures and wind loads, and this allows it to be installed in buildings of great height across Canada. "This is a first in the Canadian spray foam market, as previously all spray foam manufacturers had height restrictions. We are proud to say Demilec has the strongest air bar- rier system in the industry, so we can now be placed higher in buildings than other spray foam materials." Modular cladding is a proven and effective com- ponent of building envelopes, and Kevin Day, VP and managing director of Dryvit Systems Canada, says it satisfies the need for increased construction speed. "Brick and siding all have their uses, but unitized cladding saves an enormous amount of time on site, and we've advanced this form of building practice with our Tech21 program." Day is referring to an initiative launched last year to make it easier for building owners, general contrac- tors, and architects to use or specify prefabricated panels of Dryvit's Outsulation systems with Dryvit's traditional EIFS finishes or its NewBrick cladding. The use of Dryvit's prefabricated panels helps address a major challenge in new construction or major renovations in addition to the need to accelerate com- pletion of a building's exterior cladding: the shortage of skilled labour. "Plus, we have a proven track record," says Day. "One of the oldest uses of Dryvit modular cladding was for the Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel in 1984; it was an assembly on conventional drywall, and when the facility was recently renovated the cladding Heatlok Soya spray foam insulation withstands the high pressures and wind loads of taller buildings.
