AUGUST 2018 | 65 Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre PHOTOGRAPHY BY ED WHITE/COURTESY HDR/CEI ARCHITECTURE ASSOCIATES, INC. by putting multipurpose rooms and the fitness centre (with the walking track) on the upper level, and locating the change rooms and lifeguard facility on the lower level. Plus, while the soaring wood canopy for the pool area would make out- door activity possible in winter, it also helped tie the two components together – especially considering HDR/ CEI used timber retrieved from the Aldergrove Elementary School that for- merly occupied the site for extensive detailing of the arena. "We designed the canopy with Graham Construction and StructureCraft of Abbotsford," says Mick. "We should also give special thanks to the structural engineers, Krahn Engineering Ltd., who worked closely with us to make the tilt-up construction beautiful." Given that such a sprawling facil- ity would occupy a relatively tight site, Graham Construction devised cre- ative ways to ensure work proceeded smoothly. "We carved out what would be the arena's ice surface to subgrade, backfilled it with the granular material that would later be used for the park- ing lot, and this made an excellent base for the tilt-up panels," says Graham construction manager Justin Mattioli. Dan Soos, project manager for Turnbull Construction Project Managers, adds, "When the arena was done and it was time to tackle the water park, we used the parking lot as a staging area; the parking lot turned out to be the last area to be completed." Additionally, the builders filled the subgrade of the waterpark with clear stone to provide for integrated rainwa- ter management inclusive of storage for rainwater harvesting, storm retention, and watertable infiltration. The stone also provided a good working surface for construction activities. Considerable space was required for the mechanical elements of the water- park and pool. "Several lines of piping were required for each body of water, and we had seven bodies of water on this site," says Soos, adding that the pipes and conduits for everything from the water- lines to sound speakers and security cameras "resembled a jigsaw puzzle." As far as Mattioli is concerned, the biggest challenge of the project was "shoehorning all of the wants and needs of the Township into a tight site and a tight schedule." Meanwhile, the Township also completed significant off-site infrastructure improvements, including road and sewer work. On the Friday of the Canada Day long weekend, the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre received a grand opening of the outdoor portion of the facility that welcomed 350 invited guests and residents. An obviously delighted Mayor Froese told the press and onlookers, "When Township of Langley council announced the creation of a new recreation centre in Aldergrove in the summer of 2015, we knew it would be something special, a facility unlike anything else. Now that the centre is nearing completion and the swimming pools and waterpark will soon be wel- coming visitors, the reality has vastly surpassed our imaginations."
